So, there have been a lot of news sites picking up on something we talked about in an interview recently, about there being no plans for a Super Meat Boy sequel, so
I'd like to attempt to address why.
Both tommy and i have talked it over many times and agree strongly that sequels tend to tarnish the original. Now there are always exceptions to this, mario for example, zelda and so on. but when you really think about it amazing games like, Tomb Raider, Mario Party, Tony Hawk and dare i say... Mega Man in a lot of ways have taken away from the original experience intended and muddied the memory of how great these games originally were.
I could go on and on about why making a sequel to Super Meat Boy isnt a good idea, but ill try to lock it into a small list.
- It's bad to over explain and over develop characters like the ones in super meat boy.
It seems like a weird thing to say, but there is more wealth in mystery then there is fully revealing and explaining things that are fictional, this is the reason why there isnt nor ever will be any back story to how meat boy or dr fetus came to be. Explaining orgins, furthering a story that has a clear ending and revealing more to the characters personality will actually ruin the experience for a lot of people, much like movies tend to ruin books.
Where did meat boy and Dr.fetus come from? what happened after the ending of the game? and whats up with the very end in the dark world?
these are all questions the player gets to answer for himself, it helps the player become invested in the story because it has an air of mystery they get to think about and add to themselves, furthering this will destroy this whole idea.
- We feel like we did it right the 1st time.
Currently there isnt anything id change at all about SMB, and if i even start to think about the idea of a sequel right away i know theres no way we could do another without doing the same stuff. We fully explored all the possibilities of the game.
- The book is left open.
The whole reason we made the internets for xbla and are making an editor and level viewer for the pc version was to be able to expand on the game without making a new game. This of course seems dumb to business minded folk because it means we arnt charging for tons of bonus content, but the majority of this content will be made by the user, and lets face it, Super Meat Boy isnt ours anymore, it's owned by the fans. it only seems right to give them the ability to control the content that goes into its expansion.
- it would mean we are just doing it for money.
If we made another SMB, its obvious that it would purely be to cash in on the success of the 1st game. Again this is probably something business minded people will call us idiots for, but we're mainly in this to make great games, and if a sequel wouldn't be great (and it wouldn't) then there's no point in making it.
Now to add some hope to this post to fans who love the characters, just because we say there wont be any sequels to super meat boy.. doesn't mean youll never see the characters again. if we come up with a new design that works with them and is awesome we would be more then happy to possibly revisit someone like Dr.Fetus in the future, but it wouldn't be a platformer.. and it for sure wont be our next game.
Hope this made sense :)
thanks again everyone for spreading the word, this week has been awesome.
Super Meat Boy tshirts are back in stock! (same shirts your avatar gets in the xbla version, BUT REAL!)
you can buy them HERE!
Danny Baranowsky has released the soundtrack to the hit XBOX Live Arcade game Super Meat Boy! From the composer of other game soundtracks such as Canabalt, Gravity Hook HD and Steambirds comes 32 tracks (over 90 minutes!) of delicious meaty tunes.
The soundtrack ranges from high intensity electronic rock to fully orchestrated action pieces, even including chiptune-style throwbacks to the classic era of gaming. This ain't yo daddy's soundtrack. It's available through Bandcamp at MeatBoyMusic.com. Name your price, minimum $3.99. Individual tracks for $.99.
The Package also includes 4 remixes of the Super Meat Boy soundtrack, by artists George Dziov, Inverse Phase, Mattias Häggström Gerdt (anosou), C418 and Josh Whelchel. The remixes are included with the soundtrack but are also available individually for FREE!
I don't think I need to say much about this album to sell it. Anyone who owns Super Meat Boy or has played the demo, already has most of these tunes embedded in their brains. The soundtrack is amazing, without it Super Meat Boy would be kinda like Helen Keller except with the ability to see... so I guess just a deaf person, but a famous one.
Well holy shit.. we are 2 days in and christ, you guys are diehards!
Tommy and i are so extremely grateful for your on going support, we have gotten some emails that were so amazing you had us in tears (of joy). Your fan mail, fan art and ongoing praise are very appreciated and very needed at this stage of the game. Its hard to explain but im sure most creative people out there can relate, releasing something you've poured your life into for almost 2 years is honestly extremely hard and takes a big tole on your emotions. Its a roller coaster of extreme highs and devastating lows, but the end is in sight and we can atleast go through this knowing that...
Super Meat Boy is a Success! Sales are high, Reviews are mind blowing and your out pour of love for the game is flooding the interwebs!
Now that i got the mushy stuff out of the way, its time to talk shop.
As many of you have seen/read Super Meat Boy has a few bugs, the only major bug is of course the save bug, a bug that stops game saving till your game is restarted. We realize how extremely annoying this bug is, and trust me when i say we are all in the same boat here when it comes to how heart broken we were when this poped up.
Luckily this bug is rare, and can be avoided by simply exiting the game and coming back. So PLEASE, if youre doing some crazy hard levels, just do us a favor and pop in and out of the game from time to time so we can all sleep a bit easier at night :) Deal?
UPDATE: We believe the save bug is caused by replaying the level by pressing Y too quickly on the replay screen. To avoid the bug wait for the replay to finish or exit back to the map.
Well incase you happened to not agree to this "Deal" i will say this.
We are currently working on a title update that should be finished in the next few days, and hopefully will go up as soon as possible. This title update will fix all minor bugs as well as the save bug. on top of that it will include a "lost music track" that's quit amazing.. but more on the music later.
To sweeten the deal, and also to attempt to make up for the minor annoyances I personally am working on an unannounced internets chapter to be released with the title update. this exclusive chapter called "I Meat Boy" will feature 20 amazingly challenging levels that will keep your attention for some time, but for those of you who are weak of heart we will also be releasing.
- The Sewers of Dross (med dificulty) a 20 level chapter where you play as Gish.
- Meat Boy Remix (med-hard) another 20 level chapter that remixes old favorites from the flash protype.
all 3 chapters should be out before the end of the year, knocking the level total up to 400!
To also add to this special occasion, as a gift to the fans who have supported us through development, we are offering a launch sale, lowering the asking price by 33% till Nov. To my knowledge this is the 1st time that Microsoft has allowed a developer to do something like this and we are very proud to be the 1st.
Super Meat Boy is out now on XBLA for 800 ms points ($10) for a limited time!
To all our fans, please post about our release it would mean the world to us.
Let the world know two men have finally procreated, our baby is born... its' a boy! A meaty one.
So, recently we have been talking to MS about eventual sales and the future of Super Meat Boy, we wanted to be able to do something special for Xmas, but it felt like a sale only 2 months after launch would be a kinda shitty thing to do to the fans who just bought it.
After much brainstorming Tommy and I pitched the idea of possibly launching with a sale, a way to reward the fans for buying the game at launch. Now this to my knowledge isn't something that MS has ever done, but much like "teh Internets" we though we might as well approach the idea of a sale with the same innovative mind set. MS loved the idea and we finalized it last Friday.
So its official.
Super Meat Boy will launch on xbla ON SALE for 800 ms points! (that's $10 bucks!) the sales for a limited time only and will go back up to our normal price of 1200 ms points in Nov.
We hope you guys appreciate this early xmas gift, you're positive comments, fan art and donations when Edmund was in the hospital have been greatly appreciated, we are more than happy to give a little back.
