Meet Baby Jack!

Posted by Edmund on June 8th, 2013 in Mew-Genics

Its Caturday!

its been a while since we did an update about Mew-genics, aside from the fact that Mew-genics has become a much larger game than we expect, its also changed a great deal since we started.

one of the best aspects of being indie is the ability to adapt and change a games design over the course of development and we have been taking advantage of that a lot with this game.

so this update comes with a very welcome addition to the cast of characters already introduced, an accident prone child who goes by the name "Baby Jack" who runs the local Hoarders R Us.

Baby Jack has taken over as primary manager of the shop due to his Nona's inability to get out of her bedroom, but hes working on fixing that. Every day Jack stocks the store with pieces of his Nonas collection, bringing you amazing things for your house as well as aiding in her eventual escape from the confines of her self imposed tomb.

So yes, with this update we are confirming Mew-genics will go beyond Cat hoarding and delve quite deep into more traditional hoarding.

but this wont be your basic hoarding sim, see the furniture in the shop has significance that goes beyond pathological collecting.. but that will have have to wait till the next update.

Stay tuned!

Mew-Genics - Kitten Crazy!

Posted by Edmund on March 30th, 2013 in Mew-Genics

So its been a few weeks since the last big Caturday update, i'm a little late on this today due to GDC, but i thought it was time to talk about kittens.

So as many of you know Mew-Genics does pull some inspiration from Pokemon, but one of my favorite aspects of the Pokemon design was all the character evolutions. when i 1st played Pokemon Blue for the gameboy the mystery of evolutions was very exciting... and i thought it was important to have some aspect of that mystery in Mew-Genics.. and that's where kittens come in.

Every cat in Mew-Genics will have a kitten and adult state, as one would assume kittens are much smaller, with larger heads smaller bodies and no noses (because noses aren't cute!). When a kitten grows into sexual maturity it evolves! many of the cats visuals will change, some times drastically, the more unique looking your cat is the bigger this change will be when they mature.

But what's the big deal right? kittens and cats look different why does it matter? well it was also very important in Mew-Genics to make sure the player could size up a cat and get a rough idea of its hidden stats. we tried to base these visuals on basic logic, a small cat (or kitten) should be fast and cute where as a large thick cat should be slower but have more HP. these visuals go beyond these basics as your cats mutate and you find more uncommon forms, cats with teeth or horns appear to do more damage in combat, cats with large heads seem to be more intelligent, large eyes and more traditionally beautiful features will perform better in pageants, cats with spider legs or more aerodynamic bodies tend to move faster and have more energy and cats with odd alien attributes might acquire special properties like regeneration.

for instance this little guy (his name was Bimbo) has noticeably round features, large eyes and an extremely hard looking jawline. from these visuals we can determine that Bimbo is probably a tank, high hp, high defense and probably a tiny bit cuter than average cats due to his glassy round eyes. his kitten form would probably do pretty well in pageants, but since Bimbo wasn't born with dwarfism, once he hits adult hood he probably wont be as good of a contender in them (though imagine the possibilities if he happened to have a rare case of primordial dwarfism!).

visual attributes aren't the end all be all when it comes to cat stats though, temperament plays a large role as well. aside from the cats actions, its mood can also be determined by its expressions.

a cat like Zelda here as a kitten looks quite cute, but as an adult you can tell from her expression that shes not a nice one.. and even if her stats scream CUTE her expression says.. if you enter me in a cat pageant i'm going to kill everyone else there. and that's bad.. for cat pageants anyway.

There is so much going on in this game its going to be a hard one to pitch in an eloquent tag line.. but i think "I just birthed an alien cat with no mouth and Spock ears that seems to float around the room" might be enough to get the job done.

For the past 17 weeks we have teased many aspects of Mew-Genics, but none were totally clear on what the game actually was and how it played. Part of this was due to the fact that we have basically been working on the game as long as we had been teasing it, so we ourselves were a bit in the dark on the details, but the main reason was because Mew-Genics is a hard game to explain.

I think most would describe Mew-Genics as a cross between The Sims and Pokemon with a sprinkling of Animal Crossing and a dash of Tamagotchi , but at its core the game really isn't like anything we've seen before.

Mew-Genics revolves around Cats, obviously. We knew tending to these cats in a simulated "cat lady" environment would be the foundation of our design, but the core of what we are trying to do is make a game that feels alive, a game that creates stories as you play where consequences actually mean something...

All images are from the current beta and subject to many changes

I could write a book on the design of Mew-Genics, it's by far the most complex game I've ever worked on and it's definitely pushing us both on many levels, but I think the best way to describe how Mew-Genics plays is with a little story....

Last week I was playing a game with Puddle, a fat female cat I had been working on earlier that day, I thawed her out of her Cryo-cube and placed her in my current single story house along with her newly generated companion Champ. I had been focusing my time on Puddle due to the fact that she seemed to have a very unique tail that I believe had helped her place 2nd in a cat pageant in a previous and I needed to breed her so I could continue her bloodline before she got too old. Sadly Champ wasn't up to snuff and Puddle made this obvious by repeatedly kicking him in the face, I separated them quickly by putting champ in the attic but when I tried to feed him.. something odd happened. See, Champ was a dullard and when Puddle kicked him he just happened to also be eating and now associated the trauma with food instead of Puddle herself, he was scared of all food.. and sadly died in the attic shortly after.

It wasn't long after though that I caught sight of a solid black stray cat named Goon, before he had a chance to run I grabbed him and pulled him inside. Goon was a much better fit for Puddle and before I knew it the humping started and puddle was pregnant! I put her in the attic with plenty of food and a bed, but quickly noticed that something was up with Goon, he seemed to be constantly falling asleep. As it turned out Goon was a narcoleptic and as you might have guessed Puddle gave birth to 2 sleeping kittens, one of them fat like his mother and black like his dad and the other small but with his mom's markings and that amazing forked tail that helped in the last pageant, but sadly both kittens were narcoleptic like their father...

Goon acted aggressively towards the kittens so I let him back out into the yard and he eventually ran away. As the kittens grew up I did enter the small one (his name was Dot) into a pageant but sadly he just fell asleep on the stage and didn't win anything. To add insult to injury Puddle also acquired feline aids from Goon and I couldn't afford any of the expensive treatments Dr. Beanies was offering so I put her back in the Cryo-cube in hopes that in the future I might have a cure for her disease once I finish a few more of the Doctor's missions.

I wasn't able to save Dot because I was arrested by the local animal control shortly after I put Puddle in the cube, probably because of letting Goon run away.. and the whole giving my other cat aids thing... or maybe it was the dead cat in the attic.

There are so many elements to Mew-Genics that I really don't feel like this post does it justice and honestly I'm not even sure how the hell we are going to come up with a short eloquent way of selling this game in a description, but i think the gameplay story above sums up what our goal is, we want to create a living world where cats act like cats and the player as well as the cat's actions actually matter.

We are both very happy with the direction the game is moving in and will do random development updates as we progress, but we are done teasing and at this point just want to put our heads down and get this thing done! We have no projected release date yet but will be releasing this year on both Steam, iOS and Android, possibly more? who knows.

Oh also that number we teased back when we started... that number has grown.

The current number of cats in Mew-Genics is....
25418658283290000000000000 (and growing)

and that's just the foundation of their visual aspects, this doesn't count their kitten states, sizes, animation sets, stats, personality, etc.

If you aren't already, be sure to follow us on twitter @supermeatboy we will randomly update with gameplay info and screen shots as development unfolds!
